Our Commitment for a Unified Nation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children
27 May 2025
Reconciliation Week 2025
Walking together in truth-telling and healing so Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families can thrive. This is our Allies for Children aspiration in the relationships we continue to forge between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and nonindigenous Australians in the spirit of reconciliation.
The gifts of Australiaβs First Peoples are plentiful and we understand our responsibility to restoring a time where all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and communities are thriving.
We acknowledge the ongoing, adverse effects of colonisation and the devastating impacts on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families. We recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are best placed to care for their children. We are dedicated to actively identifying and challenging racist policies, practices and ideas that perpetuate the racial profiling and discrimination of First Nations children, young people and families, and lead to the ongoing over-representation of First Nations children and young people in the child protection and youth justice systems.
Allies partners are committed to actively addressing and challenging racism in all forms by:
Modelling change in our organisations through active allyship and anti-racism efforts including the collaborative establishment and sharing of anti-racism programs and initiatives.
Working together as Allies for Children partners to address addressing systemic racism within the child, youth and family sector, key government policies and systems and the wider community.
Meeting our Allies for Children commitments to support the restoration of children to community control so they can grow in culture, with identity and with kin.
Collective advocacy towards transformational reform and justice to turn the tide on child removals and address the over-representation of First Nations children and young people in the child protection and youth justice sectors.
We commit to our collective efforts towards a unified nation for the thriving futures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families.
