The Family Matters Report 2025

Strong, loved and full of potential.

The Family Matters annual report examines what governments are doing to turn the tide on over-representation and the outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. It highlights Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led solutions and calls on governments to support and invest in the strengths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to lead on child well-being, development and safety responses for First Nations children.

The 2025 report, reaffirms the need for greater investment in early, culturally safe support which strengthens families to change the current trajectory of Closing the Gap targets.

While Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are 9.6 per cent more likely to be in foster care arrangements and make up 45 per cent of all children in out-of-home care in Australia, the report shows the organisations best placed to keep them safe receive just six per cent of the funding.

Closing the Gap targets will only be met when we listen, when we act, and when we commit to approaches led by First Nations voices. Read the Allies Media Statement about the release of the Family Matters 2025 Report.

Family Matters is led by SNAICC – National Voice for our Children and a group of eminent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders from across the country. The campaign is supported by a Strategic Alliance of over 150 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous organisations.
